Chapter Eighteen
Mac
Mac was relieved and comforted by his friendsâ support. He was so cold that he thought he had lost all feeling in his body until Luca had hugged him tight. That simple touch ignited his hope that George would be okay, and he clung to that feeling with everything he had.
They sat in silence for several hours, save for trips to the washroom or to grab a cup of coffee. Around six PM, a large man in scrubs came barreling into the waiting room.
âDuran?â
Mac held up his hand and headed over to find out what was going on.
âIâm his grandson, Mac. How is my grandfather?â he asked, trying to guess at the manâs answer by looking at his face, but only a stoic stare was returned.
âIâm Dr. Kerling. Your grandfather is recovering in the ICU. We had to perform a double bypass and insert a pacemaker. His vitals are normal, but he will be sedated for the next several hours. Hopefully, youâll be able to see him soon, though he is still on a ventilator. If all goes well, he should regain consciousness in about eight hours.â The doctor paused. âHeâs very fortunate that he had quick medical attention when he suffered cardiac arrest. All in all, his prognosis is promising, and heâs in otherwise good health for his age. Weâll see how the next few hours play out.â The doctor nodded and stalked back out of the room.
âMac?â Luca asked as he came up beside him. Mac turned and, without thinking, grabbed Luca in a tight grip.
âHeâs in recovery. Heâs going to be okay.â Mac quietly sobbed into Lucaâs shoulder, a shudder of relief running through him. He leaned back and held Lucaâs face gently in his hands. Mac blinked away his tears and stroked his thumbs over Lucaâs cheekbones, savoring the feel of his smooth skin and rough stubble. He stared down at those big brown eyes, unable to look away until Cal interrupted them.
âMac, howâs George?â Cal asked quietly.
âHeâs in recovery. They had to perform a double bypass and insert a pacemaker. But so far, so good.â
âThatâs great news. Look, Grey and I are going to head downstairs and grab you some food, okay?â
âThanks, bud, appreciate it. I think I can actually eat now that my stomach has stopped clenching.â
âNo worries. Anything for you, Mac,â Cal whispered and hugged him. Cal gestured at Grey, and the two men sauntered down the hallway together, Greyâs hand on Calâs lower back.
âCome sit down,â Luca urged Mac, and he followed without question. The shock was starting to wear off, and Macâs anxiety took hold. He hadnât been able to let go of Lucaâs hand ever since heâd locked eyes with him. He was tethered to LucaâLuca being the only real thing that kept him from completely losing it. Mac finally understood what it could be like to have a partner. Someone who you not only loved and desired but who stood by you during lifeâs most difficult moments. It
