Chapter Eighteen

Mac

Mac was relieved and comforted by his friends’ support. He was so cold that he thought he had lost all feeling in his body until Luca had hugged him tight. That simple touch ignited his hope that George would be okay, and he clung to that feeling with everything he had.

They sat in silence for several hours, save for trips to the washroom or to grab a cup of coffee. Around six PM, a large man in scrubs came barreling into the waiting room.

“Duran?”

Mac held up his hand and headed over to find out what was going on.

“I’m his grandson, Mac. How is my grandfather?” he asked, trying to guess at the man’s answer by looking at his face, but only a stoic stare was returned.

“I’m Dr. Kerling. Your grandfather is recovering in the ICU. We had to perform a double bypass and insert a pacemaker. His vitals are normal, but he will be sedated for the next several hours. Hopefully, you’ll be able to see him soon, though he is still on a ventilator. If all goes well, he should regain consciousness in about eight hours.” The doctor paused. “He’s very fortunate that he had quick medical attention when he suffered cardiac arrest. All in all, his prognosis is promising, and he’s in otherwise good health for his age. We’ll see how the next few hours play out.” The doctor nodded and stalked back out of the room.

“Mac?” Luca asked as he came up beside him. Mac turned and, without thinking, grabbed Luca in a tight grip.

“He’s in recovery. He’s going to be okay.” Mac quietly sobbed into Luca’s shoulder, a shudder of relief running through him. He leaned back and held Luca’s face gently in his hands. Mac blinked away his tears and stroked his thumbs over Luca’s cheekbones, savoring the feel of his smooth skin and rough stubble. He stared down at those big brown eyes, unable to look away until Cal interrupted them.

“Mac, how’s George?” Cal asked quietly.

“He’s in recovery. They had to perform a double bypass and insert a pacemaker. But so far, so good.”

“That’s great news. Look, Grey and I are going to head downstairs and grab you some food, okay?”

“Thanks, bud, appreciate it. I think I can actually eat now that my stomach has stopped clenching.”

“No worries. Anything for you, Mac,” Cal whispered and hugged him. Cal gestured at Grey, and the two men sauntered down the hallway together, Grey’s hand on Cal’s lower back.

“Come sit down,” Luca urged Mac, and he followed without question. The shock was starting to wear off, and Mac’s anxiety took hold. He hadn’t been able to let go of Luca’s hand ever since he’d locked eyes with him. He was tethered to Luca—Luca being the only real thing that kept him from completely losing it. Mac finally understood what it could be like to have a partner. Someone who you not only loved and desired but who stood by you during life’s most difficult moments. It
